The Department of Sociology is one of the first departments under the then University of College of Rhodesia and Nyasaland, now University of Zimbabwe. The first head was Professor Clyde Mitchell, who later was given a Chair at Oxford University. Housing Sociology and Anthropology, the Department, boasts of giving birth to the Centre for Applied Social Sciences (CASS) and Population Studies, which are now prominent on their own. Former members of staff and former students have gone on to start similar Departments in State and Private Universities in and outside the country. See Also: University of Zimbabwe Intake.
Distinguished luminaries have passed through the department and many of them have gone on to become leaders in their chosen fields. Intellectuals like renowned Professor G.L Chavunduka (late), Professor M.F.C Bourdillon, Professor R.B Gaidzanwa, Professor V.N Muzvidziwa (current Pro Vice Chancellor, Midlands State University), Professor C.G Mararike and Dr S.D Chingarande (current Pro Vice Chancellor, Ezekiel Guti University) have either taught or are still teaching in the department.
To strengthen the department as a centre of excellence in teaching and research in Sociology and Anthropology and to enhance its reputation as such both nationally and internationally.
To conduct research and produce graduates who will be effective performers in various public and private organisations, nationally and internationally.

Description & Entry Requirements
The Department currently offers a 3-year Bachelor of Science Honours Degree in Sociology at Undergraduate level (full-time and part-time-evening classes). The entry requirements for the Honours Degree are as follows: at least 2 “A” Level passes in relevant areas and 5 ‘O’ Level passes including English Language. At Post-graduate Level, the Department offers a Master of Science Degree in Sociology and Social Anthropology and a D.Phil. The Masters programme is offered on both the full-time (18 months) and Part-time basis (2 years). In addition, the department offers excellent and experienced, cut-in-the-edge researchers and supervisors for MPhil and DPhil programmes in Social Sciences. A good relevant Honours degree (2.2 or better) from a recognized University is the entry qualification to the MSc programme.
