UMP POSTGRADUATE COURSES QUALIFICATIONS

ADVANCED DIPLOMA IN NATURE CONSERVATION

The Advanced Diploma in Nature Conservation at the University of Mpumalanga (UMP) has a strong focus on the inclusion of people in conservation and has been carefully designed to provide very clear career paths for students. Mpumalanga, and South Africa more broadly, are characterised by competing and often conflicting demands for land for agriculture and forestry, for conservation and tourism, for mining, and for human settlement. Thus, the new generation of conservationists must be able to work in this contested space and understand the genuine demands from all the players. This is a key aim of the Advanced Diploma in Nature Conservation.

Completion of the Advanced Diploma in Nature Conservation will provide an important opportunity for progression for those students who wish to continue with their studies at the UMP. It will also provide a route into further postgraduate studies (Post-Graduate Diploma, Masters and Doctoral studies).

PROGRAMME CURRICULUM
DURATION
The Advanced Diploma in Nature Conservation is at exit level 7 on the HEQSF, with a requirement of 120 credits as a minimum. The Advanced Diploma in Nature Conservation is offered over 1 year.

CURRICULUM: 
The focus of the Advanced Diploma in Nature Conservation will be to produce graduates with strong theoretical and applied skills in:
1) research and problem solving skills to solve complex problems when employed in the nature conservation industry;
2) applied and adaptive management of fauna and flora inside and outside protected areas; and
3) the human-wildlife interface, and the implications thereof.

The Advanced Diploma in Nature Conservation will consist of four modules, each worth 30 credits. These modules are Protected Area Management, Communities and Wildlife, Natural Resource Management and Research Methodology.

Teaching will be by contact and will include lectures, tutorials, practicals, field trips, group work and online learning. Throughout the year, there will be an emphasis on independent research, and the Programme will include at least 30 credits for research.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
:
The minimum requirements for admission are: 
Students with the following qualifications will be considered for admission into this degree:
• A Diploma in Nature Conservation (or equivalent) at NQF level 6.

Students who have completed a 360 credit Diploma in an appropriate field such as conservation will be considered for this Programme.

Students will be considered on a monthly basis and students who meet or exceed the minimum entrance requirements will be offered places.

RECOGNITION OF PRIOR LEARNING (RPL) AND CREDIT ACCUMULATION AND TRANSFER (CAT):
The University accepts Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) as an integral part of education and academic practice. It is acknowledged that all learning has value and the University accepts the challenge to assess prior learning that is aligned to programmes and award credit (through CAT) to promote lifelong learning. The purpose of the University of Mpumalanga’s RPL and CAT policy, is to recognize prior learning in order to provide for admission to programmes, grant advanced placement in programmes and grant credits for modules using the principles and processes that serve as basis for RPL practices.

PROGRESSION:
Students will be able to articulate horizontally and diagonally between this Advanced Diploma in Nature Conservation, and our existing BSc (Honours) and BSc (Agriculture). Graduates from the Advanced Diploma in Nature Conservation will be able to continue into Postgraduate Diploma programmes in any of the subjects in which they will have majored.

BACHELOR OF AGRICULTURE HONOURS IN AGRICULTURAL EXTENSION AND RURAL RESOURCE MANAGEMENT

The purpose of the degree is to develop the capacity of Agricultural Extension practitioners who will work in agricultural and rural development in the NGO sector, for government service, for agri-business and for other private sector companies involved with farmers and rural communities. Graduates will contribute to enhance the quality and effectiveness of agricultural extension services. They will help meet the demand for professionals who can lead and manage agricultural extension through the complex world of agricultural and rural transformation.

Qualifying learners will gain specialised competencies in terms of communication, behaviour change, facilitation, leadership and group dynamics, adult learning, technology innovation and transfer, project planning and management, extension evaluation and community development. Competencies also include client orientation and customer focus, service delivery innovation, problem solving, honesty and integrity and people management and empowerment. The programme prepares graduate for further study and research in Agricultural Extension.

PROGRAMME CURRICULUM
DURATION
The Bachelor of Agriculture Honours in Agricultural Extension and Rural Resource Management is a one-year, 120 credit, exit Level 8 qualification.

CURRICULUM: 
The curriculum is grounded in five key themes: systems thinking; agricultural extension in a learning framework; project design for development; research; and self-directed application based praxis learning. Together these themes augment the extension learning in place to enable students to acquire the capacity to practice agricultural extension in a development and capacity building context and to conduct primary and secondary research in agricultural extension. The curriculum has been designed to develop the capacity of Agricultural Extension practitioners who will work in agricultural and rural development in private and public sectors.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS
:
Applicants with the National Senior Certificate: 
Students with the following qualifications will be considered for admission into this degree:
• Bachelor of Agriculture (NQF7) with a minimum
credit-weighted third-year average mark of 60%.
• Advanced Diploma in Agricultural Extension (NQF7) (or
similar agricultural qualification at least at NQF 7) with a minimum credit-weighted average of 60%.

Applicants wishing to be considered for admission in terms of RPL or to have credits transferred to this programme must indicate this on their application. The University policy on Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL), Credit Accumulation and Transfer (CAT) will be applied.

PROGRESSION:
Students successfully completing this degree will be able to apply for admission into Masters level studies.

ADVANCED DIPLOMA IN AGRICULTURE IN POST-HARVEST TECHNOLOGY

Advanced Diploma in Agricultural in Post-Harvest Technology aims to train students to the latest thinking in the management of post-harvest processes. Identifying the best practices of harvesting, minimising losses, increasing shelf life, transportation, processing and storage of field crop. The focus is on the management of processes with the ultimate goal of increasing efficiency and effectiveness.

Upon completion graduates will be able to contribute towards building the capacity of the national post-harvest value chain, including human capacity, systems and value-adding technologies and processes. Graduates will meet the demands of the changing agricultural landscape in South Africa. Supporting the agricultural transformation and assisting the majority of the population which has been marginalised and generally denied meaningful access to the agricultural sector of the South African economy.

PROGRAMME CURRICULUM DURATION:

The Advanced Diploma in Agricultural in Post-Harvest Technology is a one-year, 120 credit, exit Level 7 qualification.

CURRICULUM: 
Students will complete modules in; Effective Post-Harvest Management (30 Credits), Post-Harvest Processing and Engineering (30 Credits), Strategic Management (15 Credits), Principles and Practices of Management for Development (15 Credits) and Post-Harvest Experiential Learning (30 Credits). A period of work integrated learning is included in the Advanced Diploma, where students will apply concepts taught in a real-world setting.

ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS: 
The minimum requirement for admission to an Advanced Diploma is a three-year Diploma in Agriculture at Level 6, with an average of 60% for modules taken at third-year.

The Advanced Diploma in Agricultural Production Management includes a period of Work Integrated Learning in which Production Management concepts, principles, methods and tools are applied in a real-world agricultural management and production setting.

The minimum entrance requirement for the Advanced Diploma in Agricultural Production Management is a level 6 Diploma in Agriculture. Applicants with a Bachelors’ Degree in Agriculture who wish to study Agricultural Production Management will also be considered.

The Advanced Diploma in Hospitality Management introduces students to research by developing the students’ applied and cognitive competencies in the acquisition, interpretation, understanding and applications of hospitality management principles.
