Higher Certificate in Pre-School Education (NQF5)
EARLY CHILDHOOD DEVELOPMENT COURSE: HIGHER CERTIFICATE IN PRE-SCHOOL EDUCATION
The one-year Higher Certificate in Pre-school Education (NQF 5, 126 Credits) is designed to equip students to effectively work with children by offering:
- A theoretical subject package including lectures, assignments, self-study tasks and examinations
- Hands-on practical experience with children aged birth to Gr. R (Reception Year) in various host schools
- Insight into career and entrepreneurial opportunities in the field of Child Care
- Exposure to After-School Care facilities and programmes

Diploma in Grade R Teaching
The Importance of Grade R
Grade R (also known as the Reception Year or the School Readiness Year) is the year before a child starts with Grade 1. Grade R is regarded as the most important year in a child’s pre-school life, as it is the year in which the child prepares for formal schooling. Grade R may be considered as both the final year of pre-school and the first year of the Foundation Phase, which is Grade R to Grade 3. Despite the importance of Grade R, South Africa has a severe shortage of qualified Grade R teachers.

Bachelor of Education in Foundation Phase Teaching
The four-year Bachelor of Education in Foundation Phase Teaching (NQF 7, 516 credits) is designed to equip students to be fully qualified educators for employment in the foundation phase (Grades R to 3). The programme focuses on both theoretical and practical competencies needed by teachers in the classroom context.
Students who do not meet the minimum admission requirements for the Bachelor of Education in Foundation Phase Teaching may, on completion of the Higher Certificate or Diploma qualifications, re-apply for admission to the Bachelor of Education in Foundation Phase Teaching programme. Bachelor of Education in Intermediate Phase Teaching
As an Intermediate Phase School Teacher you will have the exciting and immensely rewarding task of working with young children to develop their minds, bodies and social development skills.
The Embury Bachelor of Education in Intermediate Phase Teaching (NQF7, 534 credits) is a formal qualification aimed at people who want to work with children in the intermediate phase of a school from Grade 4 to Grade 6.
Embury’s Bachelor of Education in Intermediate Phase Teaching will enable you to promote the child’s social, physical, intellectual and emotional development. It is your care, oversight and attention to detail that will help children grow to their full potential.
The Postgraduate Certificate in Education in Senior Phase and Further Education and Training Teaching
The PGCE (Senior Phase and Further Education and Training Teaching) accredits a professional teaching programme that ‘caps’ an undergraduate degree or an approved diploma. It offers entry-level initial professional preparation for undergraduate degree or diploma holders who wish to develop focused knowledge and skills as classroom teachers in one chosen subject in the Senior Phase and one chosen subject in the Further Education and Training (FET) Band. To this end, the qualification requires a specific depth and specialisation of knowledge, together with practical skills and teaching experience to enable successful students to apply their learning as beginner teachers in schools in varying contexts. The programme will build on subject knowledge content, together with the principles, practices and methods of teaching, and workplace experience, to enable successful students to apply their learning as beginner teachers to implement the National Curriculum Statements. They will have a wide range of theoretical understanding, competencies and practical skills to deal with a diverse range of learners in schools in a wide range of learning situations and contexts. They will reflect critically on their own practice and demonstrate initiative and responsibility in both an academic and professional teaching environment.
The PGCE (Senior Phase and Further Education and Training Teaching) will allow the student who completes the qualification successfully to be registered with the South African Council for Educators (SACE) as a fully qualified educator with sound knowledge and expertise in one subject in the Senior Phase and one in the FET Band.
